Living windowsill

In our kitchen there is a large window that lets in sunlight.

Often I look out to see a chicken or two strolling past, which always makes me smile.

The sturdy windowsill provides a shelf that is probably the most productive space in our home. I call it our ‘living windowsill’ because so much life happens here.

I am so grateful for this little powerhouse of productivity.

The sun creates a protected, warm spot that is so useful.

I use the microclimate of the windowsill to:

air out jars before storing or refilling them, and dry out eggshells which we crush and return to The Flock

ripen passionfruit

The greener passionfruit recently fell from the vine; they darken as they ripen

set yogurt

Homemade yogurt needs a warm space for the microbes to work.

culture cream

Making your own food basics can reduce packaging waste

make sprouts to eat

ready things for planting in the garden, like sprouting the ends of spring onions, and drying seeds for the next season

ferment sourdough

prove pizza dough

and probably a few more things I haven’t remembered!

Our living windowsill may not look pretty, or decluttered, or minimalist, but that doesn’t matter to me. So much happens here; this small space provides so much food for our family.

I love seeing things change form in this sunny spot in the heart of our home.
